January 25, 2017

The focus of the IPE is the support and education of its members. The National Directors hold monthly conference calls to discuss topic of importance to the profession. Topics discussed can relate to specific jurisdictions, regulatory concerns, membership issues, etc. This monthís highlights of the discussion are:
  1. Final assessment from marketing consultant
  2. IPE and IPECC
  3. 2017 AGM Ė When and where?

Final assessment from marketing consultant

The IPE had retained the services of a marketing consultant with the purpose of determining what the IPE would need to do in order to grow membership and support the profession of Power Engineers. The consultantís findings and recommendations were presented to the National Directors during the January 9th conference call and became the sole topic of discussion that evening. Other topics were put off till the following week.

The main points from the consultantís report are:

  1. Better image/branding that is up to date (website update, LinkedIn and Twitter usage)
  2. Improved and consistent communication with members in terms of how, what and when.
  3. Choose 3 areas of concern to the IPE and only focus on those for the near term.
The consultantís main recommendation was for the IPE to develop better branding as this helps to maintain a consistent focus which would give a professional look and feel to the organization. The Directorís were tasked with developing the three main points of focus of the IPE for the next 2-3 years. Because the IPE is wholly volunteer, limiting its self to 3 ensures that the efforts employed result in definitive results. There was also a recommendation to do a better job of communicating with the members by being consistent in the timing, content and checking with the membership on the delivery.

IPECC and IPE

Anyone who has gone through the process of Power Engineer training has experienced the educational content found in the PanGlobal produced material. The content you see has been discussed, modified, updated and approved by educators and industry representatives who attend the IPECC meetings. These meetings are held once a year for 2 days in different cities across Canada. This June the IPECC will be meeting in Montreal.
The IPE has been represented at each IPECC meeting since many of those attending are IPE members but the IPE has not taken any direct action in either coordination the event nor in how the educational content is modified or amended. Taking a more direct and active role in the organizing and promotion of IPECC would be inline with the IPEís goal of being the representative of the Power Engineer profession. The immediate focus will be to engage more industry people to attend as they have a real-world view of what a Power Engineer should be expected to know. Staying current is staying relevant in this fast-changing world of power usage and production.

2017 AGM Ė When and where?

Since 1940 when the IPE was started there has been an Annual General Meeting. Much in the world has changed including the IPE but we still hold an AGM each year. Each year the AGM is hosted by a different Branch who offer unique opportunities for those attending to experience. There is a lot of planning that goes into hosting an AGM and involves a lot of dedicated local members to pull it off.

The AGM for 2017 has yet to be decided as to where or when it will be held. If a Branch is up for the challenge or if you have an alternative means by which an AGM could be effectively held, please let us know. Email your ideas to ipenat@nipe.ca.

The National Directors and Executive are working for the benefit of all Power Engineers across Canada. This communication is only one means of keeping our members informed. If you have any comments in general you would like to share, please contact your Area Director or the National Office at ipenat@nipe.ca.

Sincerely, IPE National Directors and Executive
