Word from the Directors

The focus of the IPE is the support and education of its members. The National Directors hold monthly conference calls to discuss topic of importance to the profession. Topics discussed can relate to specific jurisdictions, regulatory concerns, membership issues, etc. This month’s highlights of the discussion are:

  1. Succession planning for Area Directors
  2. Confirmation of Trial Conference Call-in for Branches
  3. Volunteer Opportunities wit the IPE
Succession planning for Area Directors

The last few years there have been significant changes made to how the IPE operates at the National level. There has been a marked increase in the issues and items of interest that involve the IPE. To stay on top of things, the Area Directors and National Executive meet monthly (even during the summer months). Even with a change in the frequency of meetings via conference calls, we are finding it challenging to stay ahead. There is also concern that due to the length of time that some important issues take to resolve, we may not be able to sustain the continuity of direction when we change Area Directors annually. These concerns need to be addressed and the Area Directors are contemplating the following changes.

  1. Change the term of office for an Area Director to two years
  2. Add the office of Assistant Area Director
The Area Directors recognize that there needs to be a means of bringing in new or exposing potential members to the workings and challenges at the National level. The Assistant Area Director would need to be able to attend the monthly conference calls in the Area Director’s absence and so they would kept informed about all of the issues at the National level. They would also need to be available to attend the AGM if the Area Director can not. All of the positions within the IPE are volunteer and some of those who volunteer their time also have a very active fulltime job. By adding the position of Assistant Area Director, it would be reasonable to expect the individual to be active in their participation. More on this will be discussed at the AGM, October 14th, 2017.

Confirmation of Trial Conference Call-in for Branches

The IPE is looking forward to including Branches as an active participant at this year’s AGM. We are going to make use of the telephone conference system to allow IPE members the ability to be part of the AGM discussions. It is recognized that not all members have the ability (financially or otherwise) to attend in person but who would still like to be part of the discussions especially as of late given the proposed changes.

It will be up to the Branch President and/or Secretary to setup the venue and phone system for the conference call. For small groups, a cell phone on speaker will suffice. For larger groups, the Branch may wish to reach out to a local Power Engineer training facility to see if they could use their facility. The conference call system we currently use is a free to call (Watts line) for the participants as the billing goes to the National Office and is by the second.

The National Office will be contacting all Branches regarding the plan for their participation in the AGM via conference call and how attendance will be managed. Proxies should still be sent in. They will be held to the side for members who participate and only used if A) the phone system fails or B) the member is not able to participate. We acknowledge that this will require some flexibility in how the AGM will take place this year. Since we are not a Fortune 500 corporation, we can exercise a bit of latitude without fear of lawyers with any luck.

Volunteer opportunities with IPE
The IPE has been the National voice for Power Engineers in Canada since 1940 and is made up of members who are like minded in their passion for our profession. Part of our professional development objectives includes supporting education through the facilitation of meetings of the various jurisdictions, education providers and others who are engaged with the training of Power Engineers. We also support other organizations like IPECC in achieving their mandate. This support has always been of interest to the IPE.

For the IPE to continue into the future as the major national advocate for the Power Engineer profession, there will always need members to be active at all levels in this organization. Your contribution of time can be a simple as picking up a phone to contact sponsors for Power Engineer education events, Golf Tournament etc., setting up a tour for your Branch and/or Student Club. You could just be the member of a Branch who reaches out to new Branch members to welcome them and be there for their first Branch meeting.

There are numerous other opportunities that you as a member could be involved in that would make a Branch a local resource for all members of the profession. The more successful a Branch is in providing activities and educational opportunities for the profession the more successful the IPE will be in representing the profession to the jurisdictions and others who affect the lives of Power Engineers.

IPE Annual General Meeting
October 14, 2017
4 Points by Sheraton
6257 Airport Rd,
Mississauga, Ontario

Ever since the beginning of the IPE, there has been an AGM. The AGM is essentially the end and beginning of a year’s cycle which culminates in the President’s Ball. Special events have been the norm where there are seminars and dinners organized by the hosting Branch. During the events of the day, the national Directors hold their face to face meetings prior to the AGM. Efforts are also made to offer opportunities for the member’s spouses while the meetings and education seminars are keeping our members engaged.

There is a lot of work that goes into organizing a AGM and the past few years the financial reward has not been there as has the required number of volunteers that are needed to make the event go smoothly. This year (2017) there will not be any additional events planned outside of the Director’s meetings and the AGM. This could be viewed as a barrier to participation in the workings of the IPE but the National Directors are looking at using communication technology to increase the opportunities for members to actively participate. We are looking towards working with Branches to provide a “local” venue for their members to meet and participate in the AGM via the telephone conference system. This may be a way for those who do not have to available time and or funds to travel to an AGM but would like to be part of it. Details on how this will be set will forthcoming and communicated to individual Branch Executives.

The National Directors are looking at ways to encourage and/or allow for a wider participation by members in this important event. We encourage your input as this is an organization that works for all Power Engineers.
