The focus of the IPE is the support and education of its members. The National Directors hold monthly conference calls to discuss topic of importance to the profession. Topics discussed can relate to specific jurisdictions, regulatory concerns, membership issues, etc. This month’s highlights of the discussion are:|
- The Power Engineering Profession is to anyone
- Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year
The Power Engineer Profession is open to anyone
Those who choose to make Power Engineering their career choice may do so because it is open ended in terms of where it can take you. For others, obtaining the distinction of being a Canadian Power Engineer is a goal because our standards for certification and knowledge are recognized world wide as the best. Proof of this was clearly demonstrated by a recent call for only Canadian Power Engineers to work in Saudi Arabia at a greenfield refinery site. There was no distinction made as to who was a Canadian Power Engineer, just that they are certified as a Canadian Power Engineer. This says a lot about our unique way of training. We not only learn the theory of the movement of energy but also the practical aspect.
Gone are the days where we physically stoked coal in a boiler and other labour demanding jobs required to keep a power house operational. Today, controls and other forms of technology have taken the physical muscle requirement and shifted it more towards the brain muscle component of human anatomy. This change in format required to manage and/or control the flow of energy, for the benefit of industry and society, has meant that a much wider portion of human society is able to consider a career as a Power Engineer. As our profession continues to transition to a more 'management of power' aspect, the diversity of race, colour and gender will continue to become more pronounced. And this is a good thing.
Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year
The Area Directors and the National Office staff would like to extend to you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year.
