Working for the Utilities Department:
The Utilities Department is responsible for operating a district energy system (DES) in the Greater Campus Area. The DES services include steam & condensate for heating and process loads, power, chilled water, demineralized water, compressed air and storm and sanitary services. This system serves not only the University’s North Campus, but also other external customers such as Alberta Health Services’ facilities (University of Alberta Hospital, Kaye Edmonton Clinic, and Cross Cancer Institute), the Northern Jubilee Auditorium, the National Institute for Nanotechnology, Canadian Blood Services, and two City of Edmonton LRT Stations.
Position:
The Utility Services Manager, Heating Plant is accountable for the reliable and efficient operation of the Heating Plant on a 24-hour basis and is directly responsible for the delivery of: steam, condensate, compressed air, demineralized water, and electrical generation utilities to all customers in the greater campus area. A primary focus of this position is to strategically plan and ensure adequate resources in terms of manpower, skills, training and funding are in place for the Heating Plant to enable it to effectively meet its mandates. The position has a critical mandate to strategically manage the reliability and costs of producing steam and power which are major service elements across the Greater Campus area.
This position is part of the Utilities Management Team, and works in an environment where barriers and borders are virtually eliminated. The entire Utilities staff is encouraged by the management team to seek a seamless, efficient, customer focused utility operation.
Duties:
- Provide leadership to the overall planning and delivery of Heating Plant services and steam distribution systems across the Greater Campus area;
- Leads the functional team in the overall direction of the division and manages the planning, coaching and development of financial, structural and human resources capabilities;
- Leads the team in the reliable, safe and effective delivery of Heating Plant services throughout the University to ensure effective and efficient utilities are being delivered to all client facilities; and
- Champion the unit’s strategic initiatives across campus through the mandate of the department by working closely with University constituents, external partners, vendors and key stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related discipline and possession a First Class Power Engineers Certificate is required;
- 0+ years of significant experience in the delivery of heating plant services and steam distribution systems with increasing levels of responsibility;
- 5+ years of significant supervision and human resource management and development experience;
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in leading work through a comprehensive industrial safety program;
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the application of codes and regulations pertaining to the construction managing and operating and maintaining of a First Class high pressure heating/power plant.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in to formulate emergency, capital operating and maintenance budgets;
- Excellent written and verbal presentation skills; and
- Extraordinary ability to develop effective networks and strong, transformational relationships at all levels internal and external to the organization.
- Experience leading a team in a unionized environment is preferred.
